This 30 months support was for Enterprise and Education editions which are used in business networks. Workstations are redirected to download updates from that WSUS Server and Admin can control which computers are allowed to get those updates. Yes but the Public seems to have no choice but if you are willing to Pay like the windows 7 thing CK posted maybe you can keep the old computers.
